Niche In The Making

It all starts with an idea, like anything. An idea to build a scene around a product. You get to develop the world you imagine. I only just started but that is what made me fall in love with product photography.

Ever since I was a child, I would make the weirdest things. Socks would go missing, toys dismantled, and my dads tools scattered. All for my parents to find within moments their belongings and home were being used for my own personal shop that I was opening up to the public. Whenever I saw an item, I thought, ‘what can I do to make this cooler than it already is?’ Which is just what I did everytime.

Product photography makes me feel like how I did when I was a kid. I have full creative expression to create a world around an amazing product. I get to figure out their niche, their vibe, what colors would look best, and how the light properly accentuates each edge.

But how do you start?

Well currently, I practice out of my second bedroom apartment. First, I went to Walmart and picked out four products in different categories. Michaels was my next stop, I needed decorative items to fill the space. Each time I thought to myself, ‘how could this make the product POP?’. Rule #1: GET CREATIVE. I headed to the Dollar store to get miscellaneous items or boxes that would show height in a photo. From there, I rushed home to get started. I put together a white backdrop using a roll of paper I found and started creating.

The process was exciting. I created things I didn't originally think of in the store. I messed around with the lighting. Started learning how to make products look edited through a lens with no editing at all. Lighting will be your best friend.

Things to take away from this:

  1. Get creative

  2. Know your lighting

  3. Think of a story

  4. Try different things

  5. JUST START
